9th Grade Curriculum

Classroom Structure

Core academic classes (Bible, Math, Science, English, Washington State History/US Government) meet on a daily schedule of 47 minutes periods. Students have two elective classes during each eighteen week semester. Elective classes are either eighteen weeks or one year.

 

Spiritual Life

Chapel: Emphasis is on Christian commitment, lifestyle issues, and practical applications of Biblical truths to daily living.

Spiritual Emphasis Week: A week set aside in the spring to concentrate on the spiritual aspect of students' lives. Students will have the opportunity to serve both HCA and organizations in our community throughout the course of the week. Spiritual Emphasis Week culminates with students spending the night at HCA on Thursday. In the course of the evening, students will hear a spiritually convicting message, and following will be a brief time of silence and reflection where students will evaluate their spiritual lives and be given time to talk and/or pray with staff.

 

Academic Life

Bible: Emphasis is on the Old and New Testament unifying theme, God's redemptive plan for man.

English: Emphasis is on vocabulary and evaluating themes in literature.

Mathematics: Emphasis is the understanding of algebraic concepts through the usage of equations, graphs, and real-life applications, or for the accelerated class, Geometry.

Science: Emphasis is on weather, oceanography, and geology. Basic concepts of chemistry are presented and physics concepts are applied to lasers, computers and other electronic devices.

History: Washington State History (1st semester) takes the student form the earliest known accounts of the region up to the present. Emphasis in American Government (2nd semester) is on the study of the U.S. Constitution, the government it established, and the rights and privileges it guarantees the American people.

Technology: Emphasis is on mastery of specific MS Office applications. Exposure is given to a variety of additional software according to student interest.

Extra-Curricular Life

Social: Fall Away, skating parties, Spiritual Emphasis Week, sports, fundraising events

Sports: Girls' Volleyball, Boys' Basketball and Girls Basketball

Service: Opportunities for service exist through National Junior Honor Society, Angel Tree shopping and field trips to local organizations
